About

The Long Second Date is a virtual dating experiment conducted in spring 2021 by relationship coaches Kelly Gonsalves and Julie Nguyen in collaboration with Ours , a relationship wellness company.

As a bunch of people who work on relationships…

…we know people often only seek out help when things are already in pretty bad shape. We’ve always wondered how different things would be if people had come to us way earlier. So we decided to test out our theory in the extreme. Instead of waiting until a moment of crisis, what if people saw a couples therapist at the very start of a relationship—say, right after the first date?

Can couples therapy help potential couples develop a stronger foundation for a relationship? Or will showing all of your cards actually cause the initial spark to burn out sooner? Will the dates form a deeper and more long-lasting connection, or will they remain strangers when everything’s said and done?

Ours

Ours (formerly Actually) is a relationship wellness company that does couples therapy differently. We believe that it’s never too early to proactively invest in your relationship and that every couple should go to couples therapy. Couples come to us from all over, “wanting to understand each other” in different flavors. Some are madly in love and want to take it to the next level, some want a serious change in their relationship, some want to resolve a fight they've been having for years, and some want to prep for the next life stage.

We designed an entirely new approach to couples therapy, taking the best from both traditional couples therapy and group couples therapy. It's convenient, effective, affordable and—dare we say, fun. Our couples programs are rooted in structured conversation guided by a couples therapist and centered around deeply understanding each other, feeling seen and heard, and seeing and hearing our partners. The participants in the Long Second Date are attending a version of the Ours program specifically designed for early-stage couples.

Ours was founded by Jessica Holton & Adam Putterman.
